McBusted’s Baking Competition for yesteryear

Here's a quick McBusted story where the boys took part in a baking competition as hosted by popular LGBTQ baker and social media personality B Dylan Hollis, set into teams to make the reciepes of his. Enjoy and stay tuned for more.

 McBusted’s Baking Competition for yesteryear

Two boy bands, McFly and Busted, who formed together as their super group McBusted, and as close friends, were invited to a fun baking competition. They were gathered in a huge kitchen, discussing among themselves.

“I must say that this us competing for a baking contest sounds fun!” said Tom Fletcher, who couldn’t contain his excitement. “Yeah, it’ll be another opportunity to beat you Little Ones!” said Matt Willis, who couldn’t have a bit of competition with the McFly boys. “Trouble is, it might fatten me up, awakening Pam”, said James Bourne, being over the top as always.

“I’ve been doing some cooking on Celebrity Master Chef, so I might have the advantage”, said Danny Jones with some confidence. “You’re not the only one who took part in a celebrity cooking competition, as I was on Cooking with the Stars, which will give me an edge!” said Harry with a hint of competitiveness. “I’m no good at baking, so I might suck”, said Dougie Poynter dryly. “Now now, let’s save the rivalry for the actual competition”, said Charlie Simpson, acting as the only sane man while still being part of their banter.

They were then greeted by their host, who is a well-known social media personality and baker, Benjamin Dylan Hollis, better known as B. Dylan Hollis. “Greetings, my fellow pop stars soon to become bakers, I am your one and only host, B. Dylan and welcome to my Baking for Yesteryear competition! You all may have dazzled on the stage, but let’s see if you can shine in the kitchen!” said B. Dylan in a lively, campy manner.

The McBusted boys were already captivated by his charming charisma, with Danny saying, “Well, you make a fabulous chief!” “Sparkling like glitter on the cakes”, said James, complimenting him. B. Dylan blushed with charm as if he was hit by them, saying, “Why, you boys are as sweet as cupcakes”. Even without the compliments, B.Dylan has already fallen for their looks, including Danny’s huge biceps, Dougie’s stylish hair, Charlie’s thick eyebrows, Matt’s rebellious buzz cut and so forth.

Once he composed himself, B.Dylan explained the rules, saying, “You lovely boys will be split into three groups with the chosen recipes. They’re not just any kind of recipes; they’re the recipes that you’ll find during the late 1800s to the 1960s, so you could say they’re vintage recipes from Yesteryear!”

The McBusted boys’ eyes were lit up as they showed their fascination with Tom, saying, “Now that will be an interesting challenge as we’ll be making some recipes from the past!” “Interesting, I bet my parents have known them back in the days”, said Charlie, who was intrigued. “It seems that we have gone back in time, but not like one of our McBusted songs”, said Dougie.

“Yes indeed, and allow me to give you all a taste of my example!” said B. Dylan, giving them pieces of spongy chocolate cake. The McBusted boys were intrigued with the taste, with Matt saying, “Mmm, it’s sweet with a distinctive flavour that I can’t put my finger on.” “It’s known as a Wacky Cake which is made without eggs or milk, something that you would normally except in a conventional cake!” explained B. Dylan. “Now that is mind-blowing!” said Dougie with astonishment. “Wow! I never heard such a thing! My compliments to the chief,” said Danny with surprise.

B.Dylan was flattered and said, “Now show me what you boy bands can do by trying to make me the best recipes from Yesteryear!” “Bring it on, as I shall be the best baker there is!” said Harry, who is already showing off. “Why, I like your spirits here!” said B.Dylan who assigned the McBusted boys into three groups, which consist of Danny, Matt and Harry, Tom and Dougie and James and Charlie. “I shall hard carry you extras here as the best team that’ll dominate the kitchen!” boasted Harry. “Oh yeah? We’ll show you that numbers don’t matter!” called James. Danny and Matt stood there perplexed.

Danny, Matt and Harry were assigned to make Magic Cookie Bars. “This recipe from 1963 is so dead simple that even Frank could do it. You hear that, Frank?” said B. Dylan, referring to his plant pot that has a face on it that was placed on a chair nearby. Danny, noticed this who was puzzled, asked: “Is that a plant pot?” “You’re right, though he’s as dumb as rocks, but I’m sure you boys are smarter than him to make some magic!” answered B.Dylan brightly. “Yep, it’ll be so simple for us for sure that we’ll blast this competition, making us smarter than Frank!” said Harry with confidence. “Now I like your enthusiasm!” said B.Dylan encouragingly and left the team with the ingredients they needed. “Comparing ourselves to an inanimate object”, said Matt dryly.

Danny, Matt and Harry gathered the ingredients, which included butter, graham cracker crumbs, condensed milk and a couple of toppings such as walnuts, flaked coconut, chocolate and rainbow chips. Matt analysed them and said, “I must say that there are a lot of ingredients here”. “I guess that's what makes the cookie bars magic”, said Danny with optimism.

He glanced at the rainbow chocolate chips packaging and said, “It has a lot of unhealthy ingredients. If we don’t know what they are, then we shouldn’t have them.” “I don’t know what sugar is”, said Harry, mocking him. Danny got out his phone and asked: “Ok Google, what is Carnauba Wax?” Matt stared at them dumbfound. “Well, at least it has the Rainforest Alliance Certified Cocoa label, which means it’s sustainable, I guess” said Matt dryly.

The first step they have to do is to melt the butter and spread it on a dish, followed by spreading graham crumbs and other toppings. Danny was in charge of the spreading, but he accidentally tripped over and spilt them all over the kitchen top, with some dropping onto the floor. “Whoops!” cried Danny. “Aw nuts!” groaned Harry. “Typical of you, Danny”, said Matt jokingly, though they helped him to gather the spilt toppings.

“Shame that we have to waste some of these”, said Matt as he picked up the toppings that were dropped onto the floor. “That’s true, but it’s better to get rid of them than to catch germs”, said Harry rationally. “What are graham crumbs? I don’t think I’ve seen them in the supermarkets I go to,” said Danny as he was helped to gather the graham crumbs. “I believe that they’re American. We gotta get the good stuff that you can only get overseas,” said Matt.

After they gathered the toppings and added them to the mixture, Harry decided that he was in charge of pouring the condensed milk. “Allow me, since you make a mess, Danny, and you would probably be picky about adding unhealthy ingredients, Matt. Just watch the unfussy expert,” said Harry, only for him to add too much condensed milk, causing it to overflow the tray. “Says you, Harry!” said Danny, winding him up. “Just clean up this icky mess!” cried Harry with a disgusted face. “Right on, unfussy expert!” taunted Matt as he and Danny helped to clean up the spillage.

Despite the mishaps, Danny, Matt and Harry were proud of how the mixture looked so far. “The rainbow chocolate chips make it look colourful!” said Danny with fascination. “You said it, Danny, even with the additives. They certainly look magical,” said Matt, smiling. Once they were set in the oven, Harry said, “You know, I say we did a good job with them, which makes us Mushes the winners”, said Harry, who is proud of their teamwork, as the trio looks at each other with admiration. “Great to work with you all”, said Danny as he affectionately held Matt and Harry’s arms. They both find themselves holding Danny’s arms back, with both of them feeling for Danny’s handsome charms. Matt also felt honoured to be called a Mush.

The Magic Cookie Bars were eventually set, looking colourful with a variety of toppings, as said by Matt, “I must say that those cookie bars are certainly looking magical”. “Magic is everything!” cheered Danny. “Giving the magic for us to win!” said Harry with confidence, while unable to resist coming up with the pun. The trio blush with their respective humour.

Tom was partnered with Dougie, and the recipe they had to make was Chocolate Whoopie Pie. “They’re from 1947. Making Whoopie is an art in some parts, and depending on where you’re in, a cream filling may be inevitable,” explained B. Dylan, showing them an image of a Whoopie Pie which resembled a miniature cake sandwich with marshmallow filling. Tom and Dougie were intrigued by it, with Tom saying, “Yum, it looks sweet. Can’t wait to get my teeth into it!” “Why call it a pie when it’s more like a cake sandwich? Maybe it should be called a Whoopie Cake,” said Dougie slyly. B.Dylan seemed intrigued with Dougie’s suggestion and said, “You sure have the bright idea here!”

Dougie was in charge of sifting the ingredients for the Whoopie Pie including the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt into the mixture bowl although Tom have to keep an eye on him to make sure that he added the right amount, giving him orders such as “Dougie, that’s the wrong amount of cocoa powder!” and “That’s too much flour!” Dougie pulled a face, saying, “Why does cooking have to be so complicated?” It was a miracle that Dougie managed to make the chocolate mixture that was ready to be set in the oven.

While they were waiting for the Whoopee Pie bases to set, Tom decided that he would handle the marshmallow filling, mixing the marshmallow crème and butter in the electric mixer. “Now watch and learn, Dougie”, said Tom as he turned on the electric mixer, but he forgot to tighten the lid, which caused the mixture to splatter everywhere. “Oh no!” cried Tom with embarrassment. Some of it got onto Dougie’s face. He took a tip of it with his finger and licked it with his lips. “At least it tastes sweet as it should be, right?” said Dougie. That made Tom laugh, appreciating Dougie for humouring him, which helps to make things more fun despite the mishaps.

Once the Whoopee Pie bases were set, Tom and Dougie took it in turns spreading the marshmallow filling on each of the Whoopee Pie bases, watching each other with admiration as they worked together as a team, just like when they write their songs or books. They returned the Whoopee Pies to the oven for a further three minutes to soften the marshmallow fillings. As soon as Tom took out the Whoopee Pies out of the oven, Dougie was eyeing on them, saying “Chocolate!!!” Tom couldn’t wait to feast on them too, but he said to Dougie, “Not until they are cooled down and judged by B. Dylan first.”

James and Charlie were tasked to make Strawberry Fluffles. “They’re like strawberry cookies from 1976. They may not look fluffy, but they’ll taste fluffy!” said B.Dylan. “That’ll be something for us to find out”, said James. They were both surprised that they were only given three ingredients for their Strawberry Fluffles, which included a box of strawberry cake mix, Cool Whip and powdered sugar. “That’s it, only three ingredients?” said Charlie with astonishment. “I guess we can do a lot with even a few ingredients”, said James, analysing this.

James and Charlie helped to mix the ingredients, with James passing over the ingredients to Charlie. He smiled at him, appreciating the simple but helpful gesture. James smiled back, happy to see Charlie smile.

After Charlie mixed the cake mixture and whipped it, he accidentally got some of the mixture onto his fingers. “Ewww, that’s one thing I hate about baking!” ranted Charlie as he glared at the goo on his fingers. “Cheer up, Charlie, your fingers will be sweet!” said James jokingly. Charlie appreciated his joke. He added the powdered sugar afterwards.

They then have to place the cookies in the oven at 180 C. But when James tried to position the knob to 180 C, he accidentally moved the knob too fast, going past 180 C to 200 C. “James, that’s too hot!” said Charlie. James moved the knob anticlockwise, though he moved it below 180 C. “Now it’s too cold!” said Charlie. “This knob is so stiff!” cried James, who tried to move the knob to 180 C. “Our Strawberry Fluffes are going to get wrecked at this rate!” cried Charlie, being over the top, though he helped out by holding James’ hand to place the knob to the correct temperature. James smiled at Charlie, grateful for his help, saying, “Thanks, it shows that we can work as a team just like for our song writing”.

“It looks like we saved the Strawberry Fluffes”, said Charlie, though he was nevertheless happy to help out his bandmate. They were proven right when they took out the strawberry coloured cookies from the oven, which appeared to be unscratched by the incident. “The colour certainly reminds me of strawberry flavour. I bet they taste fluffy too,” said Charlie. “Strawberry fields forever! As they say,” said James with Charlie smiling at his quirky humour.

With the McBusted boys finished making their recipes, B.Dylan went over to evaluate them by tasting them, starting with the Magic Cookie Bars made by Danny, Matt and Harry. “Mmmm, these cookie bars taste scrumptious with the sweetness and the combined toppings, especially those rainbow chocolate chips that give it a magical twist!” said B. Dylan. The trio were pleased with B.Dylan’s compliment with Matt saying “Thanks, it’s just like combining our magic for song writing and performing”. “Now that’s a vivid metaphor that I can expect from you pop stars!” beamed B.Dylan.

B. Dylan then tastes one of Tom and Dougie’s Chocolate Whoopee Pies. “Ooh yeah, you both did a great job making this sweet treat, especially the middle part, which is the best part!” said B.Dylan with delight. “Yeah, I can tell that they’re irresistible!” said Tom as Dougie snatched one of the pies himself, unable to wait to take a bite any longer.

He then took one of the Strawberry Fluffes made by James and Charlie. “Sweet and fluffy, just how I expected it, as with you boy bands”, said B. Dylan. “Great that it turned out right”, said Charlie, who blushed with B. Dylan hitting on them.

The McBusted boys each tasted their own recipes while exchanging each other's. They all enjoyed tasting their sweet treats from yesteryear, as said by James, “Now this is a feast that brings us together just like with music”. Everyone agreed with that.

“Well, it’s been my pleasure to invite you super group to my Baking for Yesteryear competition, with each of you working together as a team to bake these delightful recipes from the past, just like when composing your music and being as sweet as my wacky cake, but there can only be one team that will win”, said B. Dylan. “Which is going to be my team, of course!” said Harry with confidence.

B. Dylan got out the envelope and revealed the winner “And the winner is...gasp! I just can’t believe it! It is my pleasure to announce...that I am the winner! Thanks for taking part,  bye!” and he made his exit. “...What?” said Danny, bewildered. “I am so confused”, said Dougie as they all stood there in confusion. And that’s that.
